Everyone knows that Santa Fe is for artists. The City Different is home to world class opera singers and musicians. World class sculptors and painters. World class writers.
Albuquerque, the Duke City, does not share that reputation, even though the city is home to many talented and skilled artisans. We have art galleries sprinkled throughout the city. There’s public art everywhere. Music venues, authors, dancers – all call ‘burque home.
If you live here, you can sense the creative vibe, and witness it. You can see people expressing themselves creatively all over town.
The execution of said creativity, however, isn’t always pretty.
Take Exhibit A, my neighbor’s new “work of art”:
Um, yeah. A lawn chair on stilts.
I like their creative yearnings.
I like the recycled aspect.
But overall, I’m not pleased that I have to see this every day.
It does nothing for me aesthetically. I think it’s ugly.
What about you? Like it? Hate it? Think I’m being too harsh?
It’s quirky, I’ll give it that. Quirky ‘burque. That’s where I live.

I don’t like it either! Is it really supposed to be “art” or a joke?

I don’t know, Nancy. Why would anyone put a joke in their yard? They have to look at it just like me! My guess is they were trying to find a use for the lawn chair and arrived at that. They would’ve been better served sending it to the recycling center!

I agree that it’s ugly as-is. Maybe it’s not finished?
Maybe you could throw some seeds of a fast-growing vining plant at the base in a month or two. I mean, that might or might not look better, depending on the plant, but it’d be different.
Upon consideration, I think I mainly object to the wheels. Get rid of the wheels, and I could live with that. Possibly.

I like the way you think, mr_s. Seed sabotage for the sake of the neighborhood.
It’s possible it’s not finished. But I shudder to think what the end goal may be.
When they first put it up, I was sure they would take it right back down. Like they’d come to their senses or something. But no such luck.

Does a vine grow on it? Some type of plant? That would look more interesting. Or is it really just a lawn chair on stilts? And if that’s the case…why??

Martha, they just put it up a few weeks ago, so there hasn’t been a chance for any vines or plants. As to why, your guess is as good as mine!

They don’t know much about art, but they know what they like.

Bleh, then what they like and what I like are miles apart!
Thanks for stopping by my site!

There are just no words. I can’t really get my head around it. I’m all about using old junk in the garden (ie: rusty wheelbarrows as planters) but this one has me baffled. I suggest baking a batch of muffins, taking them to the neighbors and then saying, “Oh by the way, did you see what the wind did to your lounge chair? It’s so funny that I had to blog about it. Let me help you get that thing down before anyone else notices because that would be really embarrassing. ” Then again….maybe they are using it as a tv antenae.

Haha, if I can get my nerve up, I’d totally do that!
