I didn’t invite them, but they’re welcome to stay as long as they need:

I think that little guy is a future Black Swallowtail Butterfly. (Does anyone else have a better guess?)

He’s been going to town on my parsley. Here he is working his way toward devouring more leaves:

He brought a friend:

Which would be considered rude but I’ll make exceptions since they’re both so pretty.

It’s fun to have these particular guests. Knowing they’re going to be butterflies helps – so instead of being annoyed by the caterpillar poop on my container, I think it’s cute! Instead of being bothered about losing parsley, I don’t mind sacrificing it for a couple of future winged wonders. I’m happy to let them fill up before moving on to their next stage.

It’s been cool watching them the past few days. I checked on one of them last night – he should’ve been sleeping but instead he was gobbling away and cruising up and down the stems. Moving surprisingly fast for a caterpillar. I guess he didn’t want to waste any time, despite the darkness. I’m curious to see how much they eat before they wander off to their pupa stage. My guess is that they won’t wander far, so I’ll be on the lookout for a couple of chrysalises around the area. I’ll keep you posted! It’ll be exciting!! And if it’s not, I’ll try to make it exciting by using extra exclamation points!!!!!

Haha, good times!

I’ll keep planting parsley for future generations of butterflies. They are good guests to have in my garden.

I’ll be back tomorrow with plant puzzler action (the Experts will return the following Friday). You still have time to play the current puzzler, in which I asked if these plants were real or fake:

Leave your best guess in the comments section. The deadline is tonight at midnight MST (that’s 2am EST). I’ll reveal the answer and the winner(s) tomorrow. There will be valuable imaginary prizes for all who play. Hope to see you here.
