Hmmm, notice anything unusual about Danny, my Dieffenbachia houseplant?
He’s got two flower buds! Here’s a closer look at one of them:
I’ve never seen Dieffenbachia flowers on any of my plants before, but I had read that they look very similar to Aglaonema ‘Chinese Evergreen’ flowers, and Spathiphyllum ‘Peace Lily’ flowers. They have a spathe and spadix to make up the inflorescence – the spathe looks like an unfolding leaf surrounding the tall, conelike spadix. The flowers are on the spadix.
I don’t think these buds will open to show off the flowers, because at some point during their development, I either overwatered or underwatered the plant, leading to brown areas on the tips of each bud. I think the damage is sufficient to keep either of them from opening.
But who knows, maybe they will open. I’m not going to cut them off just yet (although I do cut Aglaonema buds off as soon as I see them forming because the flowers are not attractive, aren’t scented, and they throw pollen all over the place). I’ll leave the Dieffenbachia alone and see what happens.
In other news, the Schlumbergera ‘Christmas Cactus’ plants also have buds, and I’m pretty sure nothing will stop them from blooming like crazy for the next several months:
Because, you know, that’s how Schlums roll this time of year.
Man, I love blooming houseplants!
